Here is an article written as a record of the talk we had on the River Ribble Invasive Species Projects. do read it ..This will show why it is so necessary to join in a Himalayan Balsam pullng day in June to reduce the spread down the Ribble.

Invasive species

 


 

Those attending the outdoor events should be appropriately dressed (spare clothes, waterproofs, walking boots, sun-hats, sun-block etc.). Bring food and a drink. Contact the event leader in advance, to see if dogs are permitted. Non-members will be asked to make a donation of £2.00 to cover CCG’s insurance costs.
SAFETY NOTE
Event leaders have the discretion not to accept participants who are not suitably equipped or whom they consider unable to participate safely. Although all reasonable steps have been taken to ensure safety, participants join in at their own risk.

Practical conservation at Cleatop Wood Local Nature Reserve

Join us for the day at this local nature reserve. No previous experience needed. Bring old, warm clothes, waterproofs, lunch, hot drink and sturdy shoes or boots. We will provide tools and work gloves. The practical work will be light and suitable for a wide range of fitness. Meet at 10.00 at Greenfoot Car Park for a half hour walk from Settle to Cleatop Wood. We will be back to Settle for 15.00. The event is run by Craven Conservation Group in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. Winter birds on the Long Preston floodplain
Meet at Cow Bridge, on the River Ribble between Long Preston and Wigglesworth. Join Adrian Shepherd and Dave Tayler for a joint outing and visit to the new hide. Bring outdoor clothes suitable for the day, wellies and a packed lunch. The length of the walk will depend on the weather.

Join David Fisher to explore this lovely area. Meet 10.00, at the small bridge on Keasden Beck near Clapham Station.  Bring lunch. A 5 mile walk over rocky and uneven ground but without difficult gradients.

YNU Moss Meeting:
Join international bryophyte expert Tom Blockeel at Settlebeck Gill, Sedbergh to explore the mosses and liverworts of this delightful gill. Free street parking at SD655923 on Howgill Lane. The A683 and A684 converge on the outskirts of Sedbergh - from either proceed towards the town centre. A sign for Howgill will be seen - take the left turn indicated into a side street which soon turns sharp right. At the end of this turn left and after a short distance the "Peoples Hall" with its car park and sports ground will be seen on the left. Continue past this to park further along by the concrete railings adjacent to the sports ground. Easy pace but stream crossing may be required. For more information call Mike Canaway 01729 823808.

Short Gill, Barbondale - Botanical recording in VC65
Join Mike Canaway and Linda Robinson for a botanical recording day at this spectacular but well-hidden limestone gorge which changes to gritstone and is crowned by a waterfall high up. Varied geology and habitat ensures a long list of plants. Coming from Barbon park on the rough ground beside the road before the cattle grid near SD668847. Beyond the cattle grid are walls both sides. Moderately steep uphill, rough terrain at times, maximum height gain 220m. For additional information call Mike Canaway on 01729 823808.

Himalayan Balsam Bash - YDNPA Young Rangers Event
Join Adam from the Ribble Rivers Trust and help the youngsters in controlling this alien invasive plant on Wigglesworth Beck which threatens to move down on to the Ribble SSSI. Wear wellies and be prepared for some nettles. Meet at Settle swimming pool at 09.45 to share transport or at Wigglesworth Hall Farm at 10.00.

Summer Flowers on Malham Moor - Join Peter Welsh of the National Trust for a day exploring two sites. Meet at the quarry car park on the Arncliffe Road near Pothole Lane (SD883673) to access the board walk on Tarn Moss and Fen. After lunch, the group will transfer to Newhouse Farm to look at the hay meadows and enjoy the flora and discuss the management.

Winder flushes and Howgill Lane - VC65 botanical recording
Join Mike Canaway and Linda Robinson to explore some interesting flushes on Winder above Sedbergh, returning via Howgill Lane with its species-rich hedgerows with many ferns including Black Spleenwort. Like the other Howgill Hills, Winder is steep but mainly grassy with a 340m height gain to the summit. Parking and directions as per the 9th May meeting. Note this is a "recording" meeting for people with some experience of botany, not a guided walk for complete beginners. Also the terrain could be quite steep.

Jubilee Wood and Settlebeck Gill - VC65 botanical recording
Join Mike Canaway and Linda Robinson to record the flora of this delightful gill and also to see the “flute casts” from a geological perspective. Once in the gill it is uphill over some difficult terrain with stream crossings required. Escape on to the open fell makes for an easier decent. Height gain will be about 250m depending on progress made. Parking and directions as per 9th May meeting. For additional information call Mike Canaway on 01729 823808.

Aye Gill Pike from Garsdale – VC65 botanical recording - Join Mike Canaway and Linda Robinson to record an area with no previous
botanical records. A gentle hill walk with fine views over Garsdale and Dentdale. Meet at Tom Croft Hill car park on the N side of the A684 1.8 miles from Sedbergh at SD694912. Boggy in parts though not steep, height gain 350m. Fine hummocks of Strict Haircap moss to be seen near the summit. For additional information call Mike Canaway on 01729 823808.

Contact John Osborne 07967 971523 for details Volunteering for Natural England The Natural England team at Ingleborough National Nature Reserve are welcoming volunteers on certain dates. Practical activities will include vegetation management, tree planting, dry stone walling and fencing. Meet at Colt Park Barn at 9.00 am or contact John Osborne if you need collecting from Settle swimming pool or Ribblehead Station. Please note you must be registered with Natural England for insurance purposes and that travel expenses will be paid to volunteers. Please Contact John Osborne 07967 971523 beforehand for any of the meetings.

By PRIOR ARRANGEMENT ONLY It is also possible to meet at Settle Swimming Pool Car Park half an hour earlier than the stated times

If you have not been on a conservation work day before, it is doubly necessary that you contact John beforehand for insurance purposes.

Grass Wood Work Party Days
(This is info from 2014 and may need updating in 2015)

Work parties at Grass Wood (grid ref. SD 985652) Meet at the reserve car park.  Bring gloves and a flask of coffee. We will be doing general maintenance jobs.

The YWT Grass Wood Management committee is also looking to add a few names to the list of volunteers who warden the wood during summer weekends. If you are interested, please contact Chris Alder

For all the dates shown please meet at 09.30 at the Quarry Car Park off Grass Wood Lane (NGR 985652), unless directed otherwise. The location of the work site will be shown on the reverse side of the YWT notice board for those that arrive later in the day.

Regular volunteers are reminded to bring the tools with which they were issued. A limited range of tools can be loaned to irregulars. Robust working clothes, and lunch for a full day (weather permitting), are also required.

The exact nature of the work will depend on conditions, the number of volunteers present, and the results of contractor's activities. More than one working party may be formed on the day, depending upon priorities and opportunities.

All volunteers are asked to be mindful of health and safety issues and our collective responsibility to each other when working. Do not hesitate to ask questions if there are aspects of our work that you would like explained further or that concern you.

Guided Walks in the the Yorkshire Dales, on various natural history topics. Run by the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Although aimed primarily for tourists, These are very good value for money for locals too. and we don't have to travel far to get to the walks.

Malham is 7 miles from Settle. It is usually possible to attend these courses as a day student. Highly Recommended as a holiday. Also see Grasses courses led by J.A. Also Courses at Kindrogan Field Centre in Scotland
