The St. Michael's (Princetown) Trust
Devon

The St. Michael's (Princetown) Trust aims to encourage both within and beyond the Christian church

greater awareness of
environmental issues and
our responsibility to care for the earth.

Our events are designed to foster a deeper sense of wonder, greater awareness of the environment and more diligent stewardship of it. A key part of these events is the Dartmoor setting as its remoteness, stillness and beauty aid reflection and prayer. We also seek within our programme to develop worship and liturgy which are relevant to present day concerns and which are inspired by the Dartmoor setting.

The Trust is registered with the Charity Commission, registration no. 1074332.

And not forgetting:

Barbecue and Duck Race - Saturday 12th August from 5.30 pm at Tor Royal Farm - a great evening out with good food, duck race along part of Devonport Leat and other attractions. Tor Royal Farm is off Tor Royal Lane and is easily reached from Princetown. Turn off the Two Bridges Road by the former Methodist Chapel.

Opportunities for Worship

Moor to God

On the second Wednesday of every month, we meet at 7.30 pm in the United Church of Princetown on Tor Royal Lane. We use our own set evening liturgy, but vary it each time by using additional reflections, prayers and songs. The worship normally lasts for an hour.

On the following Sundays we will also be meeting for worship:

Sunday 16th July - we are holding a sponsored walk starting from the Princetown Visitor Centre Car Park at 2.30 pm to raise funds for the work of the Trust. We shall pause for reflection on top of North Hessary Tor and again at Foggintor Quarry. The walk will last about 2 ½ hours and will finish with tea at the United Church of Princetown.

Sunday 20th August - at 4 pm at Nun’s Cross, to the north of Princetown. Contact us for further details.

Sunday 17th September - at 4 pm. Venue yet to be decided.

Pilgrimage

Day pilgrimage to a Dartmoor cross Wednesday 12th July from 10 am until approximately 4.30 pm - A fairly strenuous walk from Princetown to the cross at Childe’s Tomb with pauses for reflection and worship. Booking essential. Cost £5 per person.

Princetown Pilgrimage Wednesday 16th August from 2 until approximately 4.30 pm - a walk around the village during which we will pause at significant locations for prayer and reflection. The pilgrimage will help us to consider our relationship with God, creation and one another. No charge will be made.

Quiet Days

Experiencing the Stillness of the Moor - Monday 24th July from 10 am until 4.30 pm at Whiteworks Cottage (2 miles to the south of Princetown). Within a framework of prayer and reflection we shall spend time experiencing the remote stillness of Dartmoor that we may know God’s presence in creation and become more aware of the environment around us. Booking essential. Led by Eve Dennis who worked in nature conservation and was very involved in setting up the Church and Conservation Project. Booking essential. Cost £10 per person. Drinks provided - please bring own lunch.

Look to the rock from which you were hewn - Monday 21st August from 10 am until 4.30 pm at Peat Cot Farmhouse (1 mile to south of Princetown). Using the imagery of rock we will consider our own lives, thinking of our origins in God, our links with the earth and the ways in which we have been shaped. Led by Revd Simon Taylor, Project Officer for the Trust. Booking essential. Cost £15 per person. A lunch with mainly organic ingredients will be provided.

Experiencing the Stillness of the Moor - Monday 11th September from 10 am until 4.30 pm at Whiteworks Cottage. A second opportunity to experience this day. Details as above, but this time led by Captain David Swales of the Church Army who has ministered on Dartmoor for the last eight years and has a particular interest in Celtic expressions of Christianity.

Quiet Weekend experiencing Stillness & Nature - from 11.30 am on Saturday 23rd to 5 pm Sunday 24th September at Whiteworks Cottage. A longer chance to experience the stillness of Dartmoor’s remote moorland. The weekend will include worship, activities to encourage our awareness of nature and time for personal reflection and prayer. Please note that the cottage is quite basic and there is no heating in the bedrooms. Participants must bring their own bedding and be prepared to share a room. All food provided. Booking is essential as numbers will be limited. Cost will be £40 per person.
